In 2002, Hulk Hogan returned to the WWE and gave fans what they had longed for, a match-up with The Rock. Hogan would go on and win his sixth WWE Championship, and many would admit that this was not needed. As the WWE started going in the direction of the younger stars such as Randy Orton and John Cena, Hogan's fans were still older.
Lets look at John Cena. Cena came into the WWE in 2002 and since he has been there his fan base has been growing. Just like Hogan in the 1980s, Cena is the most popular wrestler in the company. Regardless of the constant boos, Cena has the most merchandise sales in the WWE. Lets look at Cena's fans. John Cena has been known to be the Super hero like figure to the kids, and the most desired by the women. Recently, as Kane has attempted to get Cena to embrace the hate from the male demographics of 18-30, Cena has taken a more edgy approach to the ring and the boos have calmed down.
Step out of the ring for a minute. Hulk Hogan was in all the commercials, movies, and television shows during the 80s and 90s. Why, because he was a Super Hero. But what did Hogan do for his fans outside of the ring besides tell us to say our prayers and eat our vitamins?
John Cena, a man who is there every night like hogan has been in commercials, movies and television shows. What has Cena done outside of the ring? Cena grants over 300 wishes for the Make a Wish Foundation each year. He is also an advocate for the Be a Star campaign for the WWE. He constantly reminds his fans that at one point in time he was once bullied therefore he can understand them. Whether it is sports or entertainment, fans love to be able to relate to those they look up to. It is fact that Cena's fans are getting older. No WWE Superstar has ever done so much for the business without taking a break or claiming that they are burnt out. How many breaks did Hogan take during the 80s? Before you say anything, remember the title reigns of the Macho Man Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior. Cena on the other hand, when he was out of action, it was due to injury. A neck injury in which he was expected to be out for the next six months. The fact that Cena has been going strong for nearly ten years and shows no sign of slowing down, in or outside the ring sets him up to be popular than Hulk Hogan!
